Early Intervention

Early Intervention Programme: a practical guide for parents

An Early Intervention Programme provides consistent, structured support for young children who benefit from help across communication, play, regulation, learning and daily living skills.

What is an Early Intervention Programme?

EIP is more than childcare or a collection of therapy activities. A well-planned programme uses predictable routines, purposeful play, guided learning and peer interaction to work towards individual developmental goals. Skills are practised repeatedly across the day so children can use them in meaningful situations.

Who may benefit from EIP?

  • Children with developmental delays or uneven development
  • Children who need support with communication and social interaction
  • Children building attention, regulation and group participation
  • Children who require help with motor or self-care skills
  • Families preparing for nursery or school routines

What areas may be supported?

Depending on the child and programme, goals may involve communication, social play, fine and gross motor skills, sensory regulation, behaviour, early learning, toileting, feeding participation and independence. Not every child needs the same targets or intensity.

What should parents look for?

  • Assessment-led goals rather than a one-size-fits-all syllabus
  • A clear teacher-to-student ratio and appropriate supervision
  • Regular communication with families
  • Progress review and adjustment of goals
  • Qualified professional involvement when therapy is included
  • A warm environment where the child feels safe to participate

How is progress measured?

Meaningful progress is seen in participation: communicating needs more effectively, joining a routine, tolerating change, playing with others or becoming more independent. Programmes should explain goals clearly and review progress with parents at planned intervals.

Choosing the right intensity

Programme frequency and therapy input should match the child’s needs, stamina, family routine and current goals. An assessment helps the team recommend a suitable starting point and decide whether a full-day, half-day or combined therapy plan is appropriate.
