What does developmental screening look at?

Screening may explore communication, movement, play, learning, social interaction, behaviour and self-care according to the child’s age. Information usually comes from parent discussion, observation and a structured screening tool. The aim is to identify strengths and possible areas that need closer attention.

Screening is not the same as diagnosis

A screening result cannot confirm a medical or developmental diagnosis. It indicates whether development appears on track, should be monitored or may benefit from further assessment. Clear explanation of this difference helps families make decisions without unnecessary fear.

When might screening be useful?

• A parent, teacher or caregiver has an ongoing developmental concern
• The child is not yet using expected communication, play or daily skills
• There are difficulties joining nursery, school or family routines
• Progress appears uneven across different areas

What happens after screening?

The next step depends on the result and the family’s priorities. It may include reassurance and home activities, monitoring over time, a detailed OT or Speech Therapy assessment, hearing review, medical consultation or an early intervention recommendation.

How parents can prepare

• Note the situations that concern you most
• Bring relevant reports or teacher feedback if available
• Share what the child can do well, not only the difficulties
• Describe routines such as eating, dressing, sleeping, play and communication
• Prepare questions about recommendations and follow-up
